Concept of the Name

Linguistic Meaning:

Linguistic Meaning:

(Al-Hameed): It is in the form of Fa'eel, meaning Maf'ool (the one praised). Allah, Exalted be He, is the One praised by every tongue and in every circumstance, as is said in the supplication: "Praise be to Allah, the One who is praised in all situations, for there is none other to praise for all states except Him."

[Tafsir Asmaa Allah al-Husna by Al-Zajjaj 1/55].

Al-Hameed: He is the Praiseworthy in His Essence, His names, His attributes, and His actions. His names are the most beautiful, His attributes are the most complete, and His actions are the most perfect and excellent, as His actions are based on bounty and justice.

Thus, praise is due to the abundance of His qualities and blessings. He is Al-Hameed for the abundance of His praiseworthy qualities. Allah, Glorified be He, is Praiseworthy in two ways:

The first: All creation speaks of His praise. Every praise that has been offered by the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, both the first and the last of them, every praise offered in this world and the Hereafter, and even the praise that was not offered but was due and estimated as time sequences progressed and moments extended—praise that fills the entirety of existence, both the upper and lower realms, and that fills the likeness of existence without count or enumeration—Allah, the Exalted, deserves it from countless aspects.

One reason is that Allah is the One who created them, provided for them, and bestowed upon them both visible and hidden blessings, whether religious or worldly, and diverted from them misfortunes and dislikes. All blessings upon the servants are from Allah, and no one wards off harm except Him. Therefore, He deserves their praise at all times, for them to extol and thank Him with every passing moment.

The second: He is praised for possessing the most beautiful names, supreme and complete attributes, and grand and noble qualities. He possesses every perfect attribute, and every attribute is of the highest and most magnificent level. Each attribute of His is worthy of complete praise and commendation, so how much more so are all of His sacred attributes combined? Thus, praise belongs to Him for His essence, for His attributes, and for His actions, which encompass acts of grace and goodness as well as acts of justice and wisdom, all of which deserve perfect praise. He is praised for His creation, for His divine law, for His decrees, for His judgments in both worldly and religious affairs, and for His judgments in the Hereafter. The details of His praise, and all that He is praised for, cannot be comprehended by thought nor fully recorded by pens.

[Tafsir Asmaa Allah al-Husna by Al-Sa’di 1/190-191]

He is the Praised One, worthy of such praise.

Worship by the Name

Worshipping Allah Through His Name (Al-Hameed):

1- That a servant praises Allah for His blessings, which encompass him—such as making the heavens and earth subservient to him, as well as the night, day, ships, and animals; for His exclusive ownership of sovereignty; and for revealing the Qur’an as guidance and mercy:

This is manifested in Allah’s words:
