The 84th Call: The Call to Believers to be the Supporters of Allah
Almighty Allah says (what can be translated as): “O you who have believed, be supporters of Allah, as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah ?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah ." And a faction of the Children of Israel believed and a faction disbelieved. So We supported those who believed against their enemy, and they became dominant.” (Surat As-Saff: 14)
Almighty Allah commands the believers to be His supporters in all their conditions: their sayings, deeds, spirits and wealth. They should respond and obey Allah and His Messenger just as the disciples responded to Jesus when he asked them: who will support me in the call to worship Allah? The disciples said that they are the supporters of Allah and that they will help Jesus and support him in delivering the Message of the Lord. A group of the Children of Israel believed in the Message of Jesus, while another group denied it and disbelieved in his Message. They accused Jesus and his mother of falsehood. Some groups even exaggerated in the way they believe in Jesus by giving him a divine status, they said that he is Allah, and some said he is the Son of Allah or the third of three, i.e. believing in the Trinity, while in fact he is a Messenger of Allah Almighty. Allah supported the believers in the Message of Prophet Jesus and gave them victory over those who opposed them which is the law that Allah has set, that is supporting the believers over the disbelievers.
The lesson learned from this reference and call is strengthening the will of believers in the last religion, Islam, for they are the guardians of Allah’s method on earth, they are the successors of belief and the heavenly message. They are chosen for this great mission, their willpower is urged to support Allah and protect His religion (…as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah ?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah .") Victory at the end shall be for the believers who support Allah Almighty.
Place yourselves in this noble position to which He elevates you. Is there a position that is higher and more noble than that of being a supporter of Allah and His cause? This bargain bestows an honor that is greater than heaven and its happiness: (…as when Jesus, the son of Mary, said to the disciples, "Who are my supporters for Allah ?" The disciples said, "We are supporters of Allah.") It is only fitting that Muhammad’s followers should be chosen for this permanent task, just as the disciples of Jesus were chosen for it during their period of time. This is clearly apparent in the way the dialogue is presented in this verse.
This statement may be interpreted in one of two ways: either the believers in the message of Jesus are all Christians, whether they remained faithful to its original form or they are those whose faith was subject to distortion. Allah supported them over the Jews who did not believe in him at all as known from history. Or the believers were only those who continued to believe in Allah’s oneness in defiance of those who gave Jesus divine status, those who believed in the Trinity, or those who deviated in some other way. The believers prevailed in argument, giving irrefutable evidence. Alternatively, we may understand the verse as meaning that those who continued to believe in Allah’s oneness were supported by the last religion that endorsed their beliefs. Allah has made the final victory assured to this religion, as happened in history. This last sense is perhaps the most probable.
