Ask Him
“And your Lord says: ‘Call upon Me, I will answer you’”
~ Surat Ghaafir, 40:60
Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Rahmaan al-’Ajlaan (hafidhahullaah) comments:
“This noble verse from Surah Ghaafir shows Allaah’s (jalla wa ‘alaa) Bounty toward His slaves, and the extensiveness of His Giving and Generosity, as He says to His slaves: {Call upon Me, I will answer you}, (meaning) ‘Ask Me.’ He loves for His slaves to ask Him. He loves for His slaves to ask Him (jalla wa ‘alaa) so He may give them, and that is due to His Generosity, Bounty and the fact that He gives extensively.
And in His (jalla wa ‘alaa) Statement ‘your Lord says,’ He endears Himself to His slaves. He did not say ‘Allaah says,’ rather He said ‘your Rabb (Lord) says,’ meaning the One Who nurtured you (rabbaakum) with blessings and bestowed generously upon you since the time of your creation until your last form.
{Call upon Me, I will answer you}. This is a command from Allaah (jalla wa ‘alaa) to ask, supplicate to and worship Him, and a promise that He will answer; and Allaah (jalla wa ‘alaa) never breaks His promise. So He (jalla wa ‘alaa) will give and fulfill what He has promised. He commanded (His slaves) to make du’aa and promised that He will answer them. And from the means of (attaining) Allaah’s response is to humble oneself before Him and implore Him, and persist in making duaa. Allaah (jalla wa ‘alaa) loves those who persist in making du’aa.
And as the poet said: ‘Allaah gets angry if you leave off asking Him whereas man gets angry if you ask him.’ A human being hates being asked persistently and gets irritated, but Allaah (jalla wa ‘alaa) loves that. A created being – no matter how much he has – is limited, and he fears the diminition of what he has with him. But Allaah (jalla wa ‘alaa) is Most Generous; what He has with Him will never diminish. And the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Allaahu akthar,’ meaning the more you ask Him, the more He will answer and give.”
